Turn Your Phone Into A Heart Rate Monitor! – Sleep Cycle Heart Rate Review
Did you know that the flash and camera on your phone can be used to monitor your heart rate? It can do this by using the camera flash to illuminate the pulses of blood through your skin, while your camera monitors the changes in light, due to increase of blood volume. This process is usually called: Photoplethysmography and is typically measured with a Pulse Oximeter. Of course you need an app and there are TONS of apps on the App Store that promise to do this. Developers Northcube (Creators of the Sleep Cycle App) created an app that promises a fast and accurate way to go about this process. Let’s take a look:
Monitor Your Heart Rate Anywhere, Anytime!
Cost: $1.99 USD ($2.29 CAD)
Compatibility: Requires iOS 7.0 or later. Compatible with iPhone and iPod touch. (At least iPhone 4 or iPod Touch 5th Generation and up (Needs Camera Flash )).
– Very quick & easy to use.
– Provides consistent readings.
– Use the quick notes to keep track of activity measurements.
– Not as picky as some of the other apps for
the measurement process.
– Share heart rate measurements with the Apple Health App.
– Export database to a CVS-file (Excel).
– Not recommended as a reliable monitor for
people with serious heart issues.
– Even after you fill out your profile (Age, Height, Weight) the app doesn’t provide any specific data on these parameters.
Having already tried some of the various heart monitor apps from the App Store, I was interested on what the creators of Sleep Cycle had to offer. I was initially impressed with how easy it is to measure your heart rate using this app, cause with some of the other heart rate monitoring apps any movement or shaking will cause the app to continuously re-calibrate. Thankfully, this app gives you a bit more leeway, saving you frustration. Also, the readings have a trustworthy consistency to them, which I tested by doing multiple readings in a row. When it comes to the data and graphs this app only provides the most basic of information, with only logging your measurements with nothing extra. I was a bit disappointed to find that even after entering my profile information the app doesn’t let you know what’s ideal for you specifically. A good alternative to this app is: Cardiio, cause it does provide a bit more information regarding your personal profile and heart rate, plus there’s a free version. Overall, Heart Rate provides consistent readings, but doesn’t present any other information besides that.
Sleep Cycle’s Heart Rate App is just one of the many different heart monitoring apps. It offers a consistent way to monitor your heart rate and provides very straightforward data, without any bells and whistles.
