Life’s A Glitch – DataBender App Video & Review

Glitch art is wonderful, luckily for us it’s becoming easier to do without extensive technical expertise. Databending is a process of glitch art, where you manipulate the hard code of a photo or video file, which creates distortions leading you to a glitched-out master-piece. There are numerous ways to do this on your computer with different programs and techniques for example: Using Audacity effects to edit photos with. Now on smartphones, several glitch apps have been released to make easier and flexible ways to create glitch art. Databender is a app that promises to *drumroll*… Databend. The app seems to be very unknown so, lets see if its a hidden gem of the glitch app world:

Glitching w/ DataBender

DataBender for me was a huge disappointment at first, due to the photo-mode.The databending aspect for the photo-mode is terrible, you either have grey lines appear on your photo (isn’t very exciting) , half your image turns black or maybe you’ll get a thin line of cool glitch colors. The other aspects of the photo-mode are very mediocre like a pixilation, posterizing, grain etc. Then lastly the crop tool is a hideous creation, which has zero control or use. The SAVING GRACE of this app exists within the video-mode. On the video-mode you can import footage and glitch it out by changing two different parameters that give you random awesome results. My favourite effect it can produce is a data-mosh like distortion where the previous frame sticks onto the new frame, which is typically a difficult task to do on computers. Overall the video-mode is a fun and awesome way to destroy (in a good way) your clean footage.

VERDICT:
Photo-mode stinks, but the video-mode is worth the $1.19.
